The History of the Rising Sun Hotel in Exmoor, North Devon. Many years ago a wise person built an inn near the harbour in Lynmouth (original buildings are 14th century) and this has been called the Rising Sun for many years. Now the inn and the adjoining cottages, which once were homes for fishermen, now comprise the Rising Sun Hotel.

The Rising Sun hotel has a wealth of crooked staircases, narrow passageways, sloping floors and low beams and is thought to have once been a smugglers inn. The hotel now has modern facilities but still retains all of its old world charm.

The Rising Sun has an excellent Restaurant specialising in fish, seafood, Lynmouth lobster in season and local produce, and we also serve great food in our bar area. Our menu usually changes daily.

Each of our 14 bedrooms has its own individual style and character, many of the rooms have half-tester beds and most have wonderful sea views. All our rooms are en-suite and have television, tea and coffee making facilities and direct dial telephones.

Our Rooms

All of our rooms are comfortably appointed and possess a charm and individuality seldom found in modern hotels. Fabrics and furniture add to the olde worlde charm of a 14th century inn, while features such as TV's, telephones with data ports, hairdryers and kettles provide the modern comforts. Many of the bedrooms have half-tester beds and were refurbished by international designer Suzanne Lansdell of Pour La Maison in London, combining the latest design fabrics with traditional elegance within a 14th century ambience, assuring our guests of an unforgettable romantic experience.

Seaview

Each of these rooms are unique in their own way and full of charm. Most have half Tester beds. The perfect setting for a very special occasion. Please ask for descriptions!

Non Seaview

Beautifully appointed rooms of style and character. These rooms all have elegant half Tester beds.

Utterly Delicious

The excellence of our famous restaurant is well known. Head Chef Oliver Wood and his brigade continue this long tradition with a blend of quality local produce with a European Twist.

Lynmouth Bay Lobster landed at our door, Local Exmoor Game and Salmon fished from the river Lyn, served in the romantic candlelit oak-panelled dining room all add to the atmosphere of English Inn keeping at its best.
