The Old Rectory Hotel is a very special place to stay

The Old Rectory Hotel is a very special place to stay. Originally the Georgian Rectory to the 11th century church in the Exmoor hamlet of Martinhoe, the house is today a friendly, relaxed and civilised country house retreat where tranquillity, good food & wine and great hospitality are the order of the day. This is great walking country and there is access from the end of the garden to the Coast Path with some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in England right on our doorstep. From National Trust properties & RHS Gardens to extreme sports, castles & beaches, Exmoor & North Devon has something for everyone.

The Hotel

The Old Rectory has been sensitively and stylishly refurbished to retain the original integrity of the house whilst offering all modern day comforts. We like our guests to make themselves at home. Perhaps relax in the Drawing Room and Sitting Room or watch the abundant wildlife out in the garden from under the 200 year old grape vine in the Vinery. Please feel free to borrow a book from our library or surf the internet on our public computer. There is complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. The Hotel is set in a secluded hollow surrounded by National Trust land high on the cliffs of Exmoor National Park. Step outside and enjoy our lovely three acre garden full of scent and birdsong and the sound of a babbling brook cascading down small waterfalls.

Bedrooms

We have eight bedrooms – all with luxurious en-suite bathrooms. In keeping with an historic Georgian Rectory, each bedroom is different from the next - imaginatively decorated, supremely comfortable and with delightful little touches, like White Company toiletries and handmade chocolate, which tell you that people here really care. We have six bedrooms on the first floor – including two fabulous suites with either a sea or garden view. Another room has a balcony overlooking the garden with views of the trout pond where deer and ducks can often be seen. We have two rooms on the ground floor. Room facilities include White Company products; crisp white linen; tea and coffee facilities with cafeterias and Duchy Original treats; Flat screen TV; Complimentary Wi-Fi and spring water on tap.

Dining Room

We are very lucky to have great local produce - we buy meat and eggs from neighbouring farms, fresh fish from local day boats and grow vegetables in our Kitchen Garden - supplemented by local suppliers.  Dinner at The Old Rectory Hotel is a wonderful dining experience.  The evening begins with pre dinner drinks and canapés. The menu changes daily - there is a choice of three starters, our celebrated soup course and then a choice of three main courses -  fabulous meat from local farms, fresh fish landed at Appledore or an imaginative vegetarian dish. This is followed by a choice of puddings or our excellent local cheese board.  We have a well chosen wine list which complements the menu with some interesting and unusual finds.

Gardens

Our fantastic garden is tranquillity itself. A babbling brook feeds the trout pond and meanders through the gardens over a series of small waterfalls which creates a wonderful feeling of calm. Find a quiet glade and curl up and read a book or take afternoon tea by the water to the sound of birdsong. Nurtured by clergy past, this is a real English country garden full of scented azaleas, rhodedondron and the bizarre gunnera. In a quiet corner of the garden, there is a small Victorian maze. The local wildlife is incredible from the resident birds, pheasants and ducks nesting, to Red Deer who come to drink at the pond and the occasional otter, there is always something to watch
