The Blue Ball Inn

The Blue Ball Inn is a dog friendly inn located in the heart of the country’s most spectacular Hiking and Walking Trails. The Blue Ball Inn, formerly the Exmoor Sandpiper Inn, is a traditional pub on Exmoor

The Blue Ball Inn is a beautiful, privately owned, traditional country pub on Exmoor with low ceilings, blackened beams, stone fireplaces and an atmosphere of unspoilt old world charm. The Inn has a fine and growing reputation for providing real ale, fine wines and excellent food, which is served all day in the summer and lunchtimes and evenings in the winter.

We believe that the Blue Ball Inn is located in the heart of the Walking and Hiking capital of the UK. What better way to relax after a rewarding day spent, Walking and Hiking than to enjoy an excellent meal in our restaurant followed by an after dinner drink in front of an open log fire in the pub, and then a peaceful night’s sleep in one of our traditional high quality bedrooms. The perfect end to a perfect day.

Our 16 en-suite bedrooms offer the tranquillity that you would naturally expect form an unspoilt grade II listed, 13th century Inn on Exmoor. Each room is equipped with TV and complimentary tea and coffee and family rooms are available.

North Devon B&B Accommodation – Bedrooms

We believe that [the Blue Ball Inn is located in the heart of the Walking and Hiking] capital of the UK.] What better way to relax after a rewarding day spent Walking and Hiking than to enjoy an excellent meal in our restaurant followed by an after dinner drink in front of an open log fire in the pub,  and then a peaceful nights sleep in one of our traditional high quality bedrooms.

The Blue Ball Inn firmly believes that the quality of its food is directly related to the high quality of the ingredients used. We are firmly committed to the use, wherever possible, of only high quality local produce, such as locally reared meat, locally caught fish and locally produced cheese and beer. We now source local suppliers to offer only the best that North Devon can produce. Our emphasis on quality is why we have a well deserved reputation for fine food and drink and our policy to continuously improve is why we are constantly working to further develop and even improve on the fare that we offer to our customers.

We have recently started to introduce many traditional North Devon meals and deserts to our specials Board to compliment our seasonal menus. All meals are prepared using most of the raw ingredients produced in the area, like Lynmouth Bay lobster, local game, local beef and salmon. We have taken every effort to offer a great choice of wine at The Blue Ball Inn and we believe that we now offer an extremely enterprising and well put together wine list, of varied international parentage, with many of the choices below £20.

The Blue Ball Inn has recently been awarded a Cask Marque standard We are also proud to be able to offer a selection of local brewed beers some of which are brewed specially for The Blue Ball Inn by local breweries.

The Pub History

Countisbury is thought to mean "camp on the headland" and comes from the impressive Iron Age fort on Wind Hill about half a mile west to the Blue Ball Inn. This is believed to have been the site of a battle where Odda's Saxon army defeated Danish invaders led by Hubba in 878. The Blue Ball Inn, located in Countisbury on the old coaching route from Porlock to Lynmouth, This beautiful old Coaching Inn had been named the Blue Ball Inn from 1800 through to 1986 when the name was changed to the Blue Boar Inn and then changed again to the Exmoor Sandpiper Inn in 1987. The Inn is now being returned to its origins as the Blue Ball Inn. The Inn is located in an area of outstanding beauty, approximately one and a half miles from the twin villages of Lynton and Lynmouth and close to the famous Doone Valley, the Inn attracts visitors and hikers from all over the world.
