South Devon Railway

All Aboard

Just the ticket for a great day out! The South Devon Railway is one of Devon’s and the West Country’s best loved tourist attractions and is the longest established steam railway in the south west.

It is a seven mile former Great Western Railway branch line, built in 1872, which runs along the stunning valley of the River Dart between Buckfastleigh and Totnes. We run steam trains with heritage rolling stock and offer a wonderful all day attraction for families and people of all ages.

Ride the South Devon Railway and, while you are with us, you can visit the Totnes Rare Breeds Farm and Dartmoor Otters & Buckfast Butterflies. Find us just off the A38 at Buckfastleigh, very close to the famous Buckfast Abbey, or by train to Totnes on the Great Western main line.

Buckfastleigh is around 22 miles from Exeter, 21 miles from Plymouth and 13 miles from Paignton.

In 2007, the South Devon Railway was voted Heritage Railway of the Year. Please browse our website to find out all about us - and we look forward to meeting you!

Hire a train

You can hire our sumptuous Devonshire Pullman train for a truly memorable party or a really unusual and unforgettable corporate event. This luxury dining train comes with catering, from a finger buffet to a silver service menu.

The train will take you from Buckfastleigh to Totnes and return and includes our two Ocean Saloons, King George and Duchess of York that used to work between Paddington and Plymouth to connect with the ocean liner traffic to and from America, 1937-built special saloon 9005 and, on certain trains, the Victorian saloon built in 1897 for Queen Victoria's Royal Train.

Groups, Parties & Schools

The South Devon Railway is an ideal destination for schools studying the national curriculum and for organisers of groups and parties, offering up to a full day of fascinating, stimulating and very varied activity and entertainment to suit all tastes.

Disabled Vistors

All our stations are suitable for access by disabled people who are warmly welcomed. There is plenty of car parking at Buckfastleigh. Our trains have disabled access and reserved spaces for wheelchair users. Buckfastleigh station is the best starting point for your journey as we have easy, flat access and parking very close to the platform. Our station at Totnes is only accessible via a footpath link and is some 464 yards from the nearest parking at Totnes National Rail station.

Please note that our dining trains do not have reserved spaces for wheelchair using passengers and the doors of the dining train carriages are narrower than the width of standard wheelchairs. However, we would urge you to contact us so we can help meet your specific requirements.

Heritage Bus Service

Buckfastleigh Station - Buckfast Abbey - Buckfastleigh Town. How about a trip on a heritage bus from Buckfastleigh station to Buckfastleigh town and Buckfast Abbey?  The journey runs on selected days and is absolutely free to anyone who has purchased a train ticket. Our timetable shows the days and times of operation.

The service is run by Ron Greet Nostalgic Transport who run a fleet of historic west country buses. On some days, the heritage bus is our own ex London Transport Routemaster RM1872 of 1964.
