Overcombe House

David and John welcome you to Overcombe House, our multi award-winning guesthouse in spectacular Dartmoor National Park, an ideal base from which to explore this beautiful area.

?While Dartmoor is on our doorstep, Overcombe House is just a short distance from the historic market town of Tavistock and there is easy access to the ancient maritime city of Plymouth with all the amenities you'd expect from a city.

?Overcombe House has eight en-suite bedrooms, guest parking and a wildlife garden. Our breakfast room and several of our bedrooms have stunning views across Dartmoor towards North Hessary Tor and Leather Tor.

Overcombe House

Overcombe House dates back to the 1890s, since then it has undergone many alterations and renovations. As a result, the building has character and the odd quirk that you would expect in an older property. Whenever we carry out any alterations we always respect the age and location of the property.

Overcombe House has eight en-suite bedrooms where you can relax, unwind and enjoy a good night’s sleep.

All bedrooms have the following facilities:

  • 24 inch LED colour television with integrated DVD/CD player
  • Free Superfast Wi-Fi available throughout the hotel
  • Comprehensively stocked refreshment tray replenished daily
  • Crisp and fresh bed linen
  • Microfibre (similar to down, but hypoallergenic) duvets
  • Fluffy white towels and face cloths
  • Duck Island toilettries

In addition to the above, the larger Classic Rooms have:

Views over the garden and Dartmoor towards North Hessary Tor and Leather Tor

We have three types of room:

Classic Double or Classic Twin rooms

Our Classic rooms are our most spacious and popular due to their size, they can be made up as a six-foot-wide double or twin depending on your requirements and they also enjoy stunning views.

Standard Double or Standard Twin rooms

Well-appointed rooms but smaller in size than the Classics and looking out over the front of the property.

Small Double rooms

These two rooms are ideal for the solo traveller or couples on a tighter budget.

All the bedrooms are welcoming, individually decorated and well presented. They have comfortable beds and en-suite showers. Our Standard Twin room is also equipped with a bath with shower above.

We have won awards for our breakfasts! We use local produce wherever we can and John makes our own Seville orange marmalade and plum and rhubarb and ginger jams.

Our light and airy sun-filled dining room has wonderful views over Dartmoor and our wildlife garden, ensuring you a relaxing start to your day. Breakfasts at Overcombe House are delicious and a real treat! We believe in serving fresh food using the best ingredients and this is why your cooked breakfast is always prepared to order.

Our cooked breakfast options range from the more traditional to lighter fish and vegetarian choices with the emphasis always on local, homemade, organic and fairtrade produce. Our Cornish back bacon is dry cured and then oak smoked using traditional methods and our artisan sausages are handmade. All meat that we serve comes from our local butcher, Bidders of Yelverton. As you would expect, our eggs are free-range and come from a farm near Cotehele just on the other side of the river Tamar. ?

Wildlife Garden

We regard ourselves as extremely fortunate to live and work in somewhere as spectacular as the Dartmoor National Park. It is rather difficult not to be consumed by the nature that surrounds us and, taking this into account, we follow the RSPB’s guidelines on creating a wildlife-friendly garden.

The wildlife garden was created in 2010. You will find our lawn is not neatly cropped and fertilised – this is not good for birds or mammals – so we trim the lawn short at the beginning of the season then, from May onwards, we only trim the centre leaving the edges and sloping bank to to grow naturally.

The short grass area is ideal for birds to feed and the long grass areas provides seeds and habitat for insects and their larvae but also, crucially, cover for slow worms and other mammals. One really unexpected but delightful result is the range of wildflowers and clovers we now have growing every year that neither of us, have seen since we have walked through wild meadows in our youth. Then, in September, we rake off any hay or dry grass but leave the long grass until the following March/April to begin the cycle again...

By taking our garden down this route we have seen many fascinating visitors to our garden some plentiful, others rare or endangered. We have foxes, hedgehogs, pygmy shrews, bank voles and over 25 different varieties of bird that we can identify paying us a visit, including a great spotted woodpecker, sparrow hawk and song thrushes to name a few.

Our biggest success story has to be our hedgehogs. While the species is in steep decline, we are delighted to have encouraged a great many hedgehogs to visit and we provide plenty of food to encourage them. This year we have had whole families of hedgehogs visiting, and it has been a joy to see and one that our guests have really enjoyed too.

Our garden is not exclusively for wild life, humans are welcome to sit back our terrace and enjoy the view and the antics of the varied visitors to our garden!

The Area

With Dartmoor National Park on our doorstep, our B&B is perfectly placed for a relaxing weekend or mid-week break. Close to Tavistock and Plymouth, there's plenty to see and do for longer stays.

Dartmoor is one of the largest and wildest areas of open country in southern England. With heather-covered moorland, deep wooded gorges, lake-like reservoirs and tumbling rocky rivers there’s fantastic walking, cycling and rock climbing and other sports to enjoy. Add in thriving market towns, pretty villages and local farmers and growers producing fantastic local produce and you can appreciate why this is such a great area to explore where you can escape the pressures of the daily grind.

Within easy reach, you have access to activities such as bouldering, tree surfing, kayaking, geocaching, rock climbing, moorland and gorge walking, horse riding, cycling, fly and coarse fishing and golfing to name but a few. For those of you who enjoy less energetic pastimes, there are farmers’ markets, historic houses, museums, craft shops and galleries, gardens and interesting churches to visit.

We have lots of maps, leaflets and guidebooks detailing how you can get the most out of your stay on Dartmoor that you are welcome to borrow. All we ask is that you return them to us after your fun filled day so they are available for others to enjoy; but if you need them again please do ask as we have several copies of most items.
