Lydford Country House
Welcome to Lydford Country House, B&B within Dartmoor's National Park, Devon
Lydford Country House was built by the celebrated artist William Widgery (1822-1893) and stands in eight acres of grounds. People from around the world are being treated to glimpses of Dartmoors enchanting beauty by the recently released Spielberg film "War Horse" which features rural life on the moors in the early twentieth century. The house has welcomed guests for over 100 years and is an ideal location for short breaks, romantic weekends, business travellers, or for those seeking a longer stay. Excellent livery, cycle-hire and pet-friendly facilities add further value for those seeking to explore Dartmoor and the surrounding area. Our location near the Devon / Cornwall border means that the rugged Cornish North Coast, gentler South Devon coast, Eden Project and other great holiday destinations are all less than one hour's drive away.
About Us
Lydford Country House offers 4 Star accredited Bed and Breakfast. It is located on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, yet only 15 minutes from the A30 and 10 minutes from the market town of Tavistock. Exclusive hire (self-catering or catered) is also available, as are excellent livery facilities, cycle-hire and pet-friendly accommodation.
Rooms
Our eleven en-suite rooms offer a warm and welcoming atmosphere, each with their own individual style in keeping with the character of the house. Each room includes the comforts you would expect to make your stay as cosy and relaxing as possible. Two of the rooms have four-poster beds and all include tea & coffee facilities, LCD TV and hair dryers. We are happy to deliver newspapers of your choice to your door by prior arrangement. Well-behaved pets are also welcome, with dog baskets available on request.
Restaurant
Lydford Country House is not a hotel in the traditional sense, just a very comfortable Bed and Breakfast. Dinner is a delicious 3 course set-menu, from £30 per person. When we are unable to serve dinner, we can recommend excellent local restaurants and pubs. We have a drinks licence, wines, soft drinks and spirits can be found.

Our location provides a wide range of excellent riding for riders of all abilities. We are 100 yds from the open moor, and the local roads, forests & commons offer miles of hacking. Maps and packed lunches can be provided. We also provide DIY livery for those wishing to base their horse here for a longer period.
Pet Friendly
Lydford Country House is delighted to welcome well-behaved dogs. Toby, Gypsy and Babe, our resident dogs, always look forward to meeting new friends. We are lucky to have a real variety of countryside on our doorstep. Ranging from the high moor to nearby wooded valleys, our amazing location provides an idyllic place to bring your pets on holiday with fantastic walks and vast areas for your dogs to run free. We know how important our canine companions are and offer accommodation accordingly, with baskets, towels and treats. There is a charge of £7 per night.
Cycle Hire
We are an ideal staging post for those completing the Coast to Coast route in a realistic 3 days. The 102 mile route is one of the most stunning sections of the National Cycle Network. It combines the beaches and superb estuaries of North Devon with lush green valleys of the Torridge, Tavy, Walkham and other West Country rivers. The Granite Way runs adjacent to us and we have our own private gated access.
Cyclists and walkers often use us as a watering hole where they can sit above the trail and watch others ride through the old railway-cutting while enjoying a cream tea or cool beer. Other traffic-free sections include the Plym Valley Trail and the famous Tarka Trail. The trail starts in the city of Plymouth and finishes in the popular seaside resort of Ilfracombe. In addition, there are breath-taking viaducts and bridges bequeathed by Victorian railway engineers. Day rates are £10 for adults and £7 for children.
