Try following the least well known but arguably the most peaceful and tranquil part of the Tarka Trail. Leave the historic town of Torrington and head along the old railway line towards Petrockstowe and Meeth. Alternatively join the trail in Bideford and follow the river to the beauiful Instow estuary and beyond to the bustling town of Barnstaple. The trail offer diverse and picturesque North Devon scenery with a variety of long and shorter walks along a flat and beautifully maintained disused railway. Take a champagne picnic to enjoy along the way or return to the hotel and indulge with a champagne afternoon tea in front of crackling log fires.

The Vanilla Pod at The Cridford Inn

www.vanillapod-cridfordinn.com
The dream of opening up a Pub/Restaurant in the country has come true, in the shape of the picturesque village of Trusham. We originally opened up The Vanilla Pod Restaurant in Torquay in September 2003. The restaurant had become popular with the local community, tourists and people from further a field. With our experience and reputation we have a new challenge calling us in the form of the Cridford Inn.
Excellence of cuisine and an interesting wine cellar is the aim of this new temple to gourmet cooking. Ian the owner and Head Chef has been in the catering industry since leaving college, and has won many awards for his cuisine. Private parties can be catered for, we specialise in after meeting lunches or dinners for business professional teams, weddings, anniversaries and birthdays.
For that relaxed, nowhere to go in a hurry evening, then the menu will no doubt stimulate your taste buds. The starters alone, will make your mouth water...
No visit to the Vanilla Pod is complete without tasting one of Ian's award winning desserts. I know many have given up on desserts in an attempt to keep the pounds away, however, this will be the visit where you will throw all caution to the wind and just 'indulge'. Of course for those without a sweet tooth (I do sympathise) there is local Westcountry cheese & biscuits.
Relaxing Accommodation
There are also four en suite rooms for residential accommodation available. The charm and character of this historic building has been blended with The Vanilla Pod contemporary approach to modern furnishings to create the perfect location for a relaxing break.
A warm and friendly welcome is guaranteed in this period built building which is set in a tranquil atmosphere.
There are a total of 4 rooms, all of the bedrooms at the Cridford Inn benefit from en-suite bathrooms to ensure your comfort and privacy. Rooms also include: colour television and hospitality tray.
The decor of the rooms are a blend of contemporary styling, sympathetic to the buildings architecture...creating a truly relaxing environment to unwind. With the Cridford Inn just downstairs offering a superb selection of food from either the Tapas Menu in the bar or in the restaurant and an enigmatic bar area your stay will be extremely comfortable.
Room Pricing
£40.00 per person per night.
Includes Bed and Breakfast.
All rooms on en-suite.
Experience a relaxing stay in comfortable surroundings and what better compliment than the Devon countryside and an a la carte restaurant on your dorrstep. The Bar offers a comprehensive menu as well as providing a warm atmosphere that is welcoming for the whole family.

Business: Yapham Cottages
Grade: excellent
My husband and I have just returned from a four night break at Yapham Coastal Cottages and could not have asked for more. The setting is wonderful and the cottage (Shipload) was beautiful. We were greeted with homemade Scones, clotted cream and jam along with a box of chocolates. The service and welcome we received from our hosts was outstanding and the cottages themselves were immaculate and full of little personal touches. All in all, we would highly recommend a visit to Yapham for a truly relaxing break. There is also so much to see and do in the area and lots of places to eat out. Placed in the cottage is a very comprehensive guide of places to eat and there is lots of information on things to do in the area. We will defintely be going back!

Springtime is the perfect time of year to enjoy this beautiful area and spring certainly comes earlier, with beautiful wild flowers, rare birds and wildlife completing the picture. Those with a sweet tooth will appreciate the local Devon hand-made chocolates and fabulous fudge, renowned Salcombe clotted cream ice cream and delicious Hot Cross Buns, like those freshly baked on the premises at Frogmore Bakery. For traditional egg decorating activities there are an abundance of local farm shops selling free-range eggs. The Easter holidays are the ideal time to book a short break in the South Hams, the southernmost part of Devon. With a milder climate, wonderful walking, sailing and water sports, fantastic pubs, cream teas and plenty of individual shops in quaint streets to explore, come and enjoy the fresh air and walk off all that chocolate!
Local Coast & Countryside Events organised by the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty provide wonderful opportunities for the whole family to explore the beautiful countryside and appreciate nature during the Easter period. Events for 2007 include ‘Make and decorate an Easter Tree’ on the Dartington Estate , Easter Egg hunts in stunning locations such as the National Trust’s Overbecks Gardens near Salcombe, and an Easter Eggs-travaganza with egg decorating and a giant egg rolling competition! Visit www.southdevonaonb.org.uk for more details.
Coast & Country Cottages offer Easter breaks (see below for latest Special Offers) at many of the self-catering holiday properties they manage in the area. With offices in Salcombe, Kingsbridge and Dartmouth and nearly 350 properties in and around the South Devon coast and countryside, the local teams can help you find just what you are looking for, whether a romantic retreat for two, a cosy cottage for walkers, a stylish waterside apartment or a large elegant farmhouse. Those booking an Easter break will also receive a bag of Devon fudge with the compliments of Coast & Country Cottages.
‘Easter Breaks are becoming increasingly popular’ says Karen Jones who, with her husband Andrew, owns and manages Coast & Country Cottages. ‘We are seeing a change in the patterns of holidays taken by an increasingly busy society who really value their time off work. More and more of our customers are taking more frequent but maybe shorter breaks and usually in addition to their annual holiday, whether taken in the UK or abroad. Many of our customers love the area so much that they visit us more than once a year and a good proportion initially book a short break and love it so much that they return for a full week next time.’
Contact the local teams in Salcombe 01548 843773, Dartmouth 01803 839499 and Kingsbridge (for South Hams coastal and village properties) 01548 852572 today and let them suggest an Easter break or a short break to suit you sometime soon!

The Jack In The Green
needs little or no introduction to those in the know. Numerous accolades from independent critics as one of the best restaurants in Devon, underpinned by two AA rosettes and praise from the Good Food Guide, is testament to the passion and skill that emanates from the kitchen. This year alone the team have won a Gold in the Taste of the West Food & Drink Awards and been named the Best Dining Pub in Devon by "Devon Life" Magazine.
Owner Paul Parnell and Head Chef, Matthew Mason have gained a reputation for a pub that can be whatever you want it to be - formal or informal, a place to celebrate birthdays, christenings, weddings and anniversaries or a place to have a glass of wine or a locally brewed pint. We don't mind if this is for two people or as one of our regulars did recently for his 50th Birthday - Jazz in the courtyard with canapés, followed by a four course gourmet dinner and lashings of Chilean wine for one hundred people.
Frequently changing menus are dictated solely by the seasons and enormous pride is taken in letting them act as a shop window to display the very best of what Devon has to offer. You won't find asparagus in October but you will find wild venison loin, packed full of moorland richness, well hung and cooked pink to retain as much of its distinctive flavour as is humanly possible. Paired with a fruity, full bodied Argentinean Malbec, relaxed food and drink like this takes some beating.
The whole operation centres around ingredients that are a privilege to handle. Almost all of what is used is grown or reared from well within a twenty-five mile radius of the kitchen and the staff can even give you the Christian names of our apple juice supplier in the next town. Serving the bland, limp or jaded has never entered our minds. We believe people should be fussy and that when they come to us, everything from the welcome through to the after dinner coffee should be genuine and as good as it can be.
All through the meal there will be a story behind what you are eating - In essence you will taste the very fabric of the countryside around us. As a business, The Jack in the Green wants to serve food that is a million miles away from your average pub food but is still priced affordably. Why serve air freighted lamb from New Zealand when on our doorstep is the finest local Pole Dorset spring lamb? Encased in a lemon, garlic, rosemary and sea salt crust and served with freshly dug brassicas and sweet root vegetables, nothing could be simpler or more delicious. When the basic ingredients are this good the cooking doesn't need to be complicated.

This late Victorian Country House, reached by a private lane, is set in its own 36 acres overlooking the East Dart river and valley, offering perfect peace and quiet with direct access onto the moor. Lydgate House, facing south with stunning views across both valley and moorland, is privately owned and run by Cindy and Peter Farrington, who aim to provide the very best in personal service.
Following major refurbishment over the last four years, Lydgate House has not only been awarded 5 Diamonds by both the RAC and AA, but also the Little Gem Award (the highest accolade possible) from the RAC every year since 2001. Which? Hotel Guide selected Lydgate House as a Hotel of the Year for 2003 (Tranquil Treasure category) and it is also recommended by both the Good Hotel Guide and Michelin. The RAC have also awarded two rosettes for dining.
Guests return again and again to Lydgate House and most new visitors come through recommendation.
THE HOUSE AND GROUNDS
With an atmosphere more like a country house than a hotel, Lydgate House is perfect for those looking for a relaxed environment surrounded by glorious countryside. The guests’ lounge, which also houses the small bar, has a log burning stove and beautiful views across the valley. Bookshelves and tables abound with novels, magazines and books on Dartmoor and many other subjects. A small snug leads to the conservatory dining room, again with spectacular views. The terrace and gardens overlook the valley and lead directly onto the moor.
Within the 36 acres of Lydgate House there is a Hay Meadow containing several rare species of plants including orchids. The river running through the grounds attracts a variety of birds from Buzzards and Herons to Swallows and House Martins who make their home here. Dartmoor ponies and cattle graze the fields while the paddock provides home to four aged sheep and a variety of hens.
ROOMS
The seven en-suite rooms are immaculate, individually furnished and decorated. There are many personal touches to make you feel at home as well as the usual facilities of tea/coffee tray, hairdryer, remote control TV and radio-alarm clock. Duvets and top pillows are filled with luxurious Siberian goose down. All bedrooms, named after Dartmoor birds, are on the first floor except for Dipper, our only ground floor room.
DINING AT LYDGATE
Our restaurant has been awarded two rosettes by the RAC, dining and breakfast awards by the AA and the particularly coveted ‘steaming pot’ award by Which? Hotel Guide. Whether dining by candle light or taking breakfast in our conservatory dining room you will enjoy the spectacular views of the beautiful valley of the East Dart River.
The daily-changing menus feature locally sourced ingredients of the highest quality and meals are freshly prepared for our guests each evening. A three-course dinner is served every evening, except Mondays, at a cost of £28.50 per person with coffee and mints an additional £3.25.
A reasonably priced wine list composed of New World and European wines complements the menus.
Breakfast is a sumptuous meal. The buffet table offers a variety of juices, cereals, fresh and dried fruits and yoghurts. You may then order a cooked breakfast from our extensive menu which includes smoked haddock and salmon as well as the more traditional ‘Full English’. You will enjoy fresh eggs laid by our own hens each morning and the sausages and bacon are locally produced. Fresh home-baked bread with local or home-made preserves round off the meal.
