Self Catering Holiday of the Year Award Winner 2007/08 Higher Wiscombe self catering cottages is situated at the heart of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. At the head of the peaceful Southleigh valley, just a few miles from the World Heritage coastline at Beer, Sidmouth and Branscombe, nestle three luxurious award winning self catering holiday cottages, all with stunning rural views. 

Newly converted in 2005/6 from old stone barns the holiday cottages can accommodate parties from 6 to 32 and are perfect for traditional seaside holiday, bird watching and walking holidays or just a relaxing break. The oak dining table in the largest barn can dine up to 32 guests making Higher Wiscombe the ideal location for all kinds of family reunions, anniversaries and house parties. From November 2006 the owners have been offsetting guests’ carbon emissions within the price of the holiday making it the first holiday of its kind to do so. 

Our Luxurious 5-star Cottages
There are three self catering holiday cottages, all detached from one another, and all with separate enclosed gardens set around a traditional Devon Courtyard. 

The Old Winery is a substantial building; it was formerly an apple winery and is a unique, enormous and lavishly appointed barn. The Old Winery can comfortably accommodate up to twenty adults in ten bedrooms with eight bathrooms. It has a huge oak dining table that can seat up to 32 at one time and has two kitchens, making it ideal for large gatherings or for bringing in outside caterers. Many old features have been retained, to be complemented by underfloor heating and thoroughly modern appliances throughout.

The Thatched Barn is a three bed-roomed holiday cottage, all en-suite, with a huge sitting living room with a fabulous view overlooking Southleigh Valley. The master bedroom has a four-poster bed and the en-suite has a luxurious roll top bath. Lots of exposed beams and brickwork blend with range cookers and wood burners and squashy sofas.

The Flint Barn, which only opened last summer, also has three bedrooms, the master having a six foot wide bed and an en-suite wet-room. High ceilings and plenty of windows give this barn an airy feeling and like the other barns is equipped to the highest standard. (The Flint Barn is currently awaiting grading, we are confident that it will also meet 5 Star criteria).

Awards
In April 2007 we were awarded the Gold Medal for Self Catering Holiday of the Year by Enjoy England and were upgraded to Gold by the Green Tourism Business Scheme. We are finalists in the South West Tourism Excellence Awards for Sustainable Tourism 2007/8, finalist in the 2007 DEBI Sustainable Tourism Awards and are a regional finalist in the CLA Centenary Rural Buildings Awards.

The sympathetically converted barns combine exposed beams and brickwork with high quality new oak kitchens, bathrooms, furniture, and decoration. The water system is pressurized to ensure luxurious showers. All barns have modern en-suite shower rooms and sumptuous roll top bathrooms for that additional pampering.

The light and airy barns at Higher Wiscombe offer panoramic views over the East Devon countryside, and guests can explore our 52-acre grounds, which include woodlands, orchards, pasture and streams with abundant wildlife. We also have a 500-year-old Oak tree that is designated one of the Great Trees of East Devon on our land that forms part of a County Wildlife Site.

We are perfectly situated for the Jurassic Coast, with it’s beaches at Lyme Regis, Beer, Branscombe and Sidmouth, sailing at Exmouth and Lyme Regis and collecting fossils at Charmouth. The East Devon Way can be accessed on foot from our property. It is an excellent base as a touring centre for the West Country within easy reach of numerous National Trust properties, RSPB reserves, Dartmoor, Exmoor, Pecorama and The Heritage Coast Walk.

Conferences
Conference Facilities: In addition to 5 Star accommodation with the option of first class catering or transport to a selection of excellent restaurants we have created a dedicated boardroom for small conferences at Higher Wiscombe.

The room can be configured in either of two ways, a traditional board room with board room table and chairs or an off-site relaxed style with comfy sofas and low tables. There is a 42” Toshiba plasma screen which has all the necessary connections to attach to PC’s for Powerpoint presentations.

We combine the luxurious facilities of Higher Wiscombe with the conference room and the outside caterers to provide an extremely good value get away for around 16-20 executives.
